The US forage cap pattern of 1861 replaced the Model 1858. It features the round sloping crescent shaped leather brim (made famous by General Irwin McDowell), and shares the same quality construction as the 1858 model cap.

This cap was often called the "Bummer’s cap", because so many of General Sherman’s men wore them on the March to the Sea.
