1855 US Forage Cap for Dragoons with optional insignia.

  #5504  M-1855 US Forage Cap Dark Blue wool with a branch of service colored welt (piping) around the crown– Dragoon shown at left.  Black cotton lining.  Earlier Shako style wide brims were typically used.  Our brim is 9 ounce supple leather.  Also, a smaller brim was introduced– probably to save costs– see Cavalry cap in enlargement.  Leather chin strap with brass slide.  US Eagle buttons on the side. Custom made for each order. Made in USA   Shown with optional Cap Insignia.   

Welt colors to designate Branch of Service: 

  • Artillery- Red

  • Dragoons- Orange

  • Cavalry-  Yellow 

  • Infantry-  Light Blue

  • Green- Mounted Rifles

  Historical Info... In 1855 when the Cavalry branch was organized, Dragoons were instructed to wear the crossed saber insignia with saber tips "pointed down", where as Cavalry were to wear the insignia saber tips "pointed up".   

  All caps listed here are Custom order.  Custom Caps are not returnable.  Typical delivery about 6 weeks.  Please double check your head circumference before ordering.

PLEASE NOTE:  Our address is the address to our factory, we do not have a storefront staffed by sales persons. We are all cutting and sewing uniforms. Our seamstresses are trained to sew, but they are not trained in sales.

If you would like to visit, we are happy to accommodate, but PLEASE! call us 3 to 4 days in advance to schedule an appointment.

This will help us give you the attention and service that you deserve. Walk-in customers are sometimes disappointed after a long drive.
